Cowork task management · current experience

Manage tasks, not projects

Cowork lets you find, filter and reopen delegated tasks. Microsoft does not currently document a separate Cowork “Project” container like Claude Projects.

The available task views and automations depend on Cowork access and your organization's rollout.
A practical Microsoft project setup
📁OneDrive / SharePointStores the approved project files and permissions.
📚NotebookKeeps the selected sources Copilot should reason over.
🧭Cowork taskPerforms one defined piece of project work.
📄PageHolds an editable output people can refine together.

What Cowork provides today

🔎

Find earlier tasks

Use My tasks, recent work and Search to reopen a previous Cowork conversation and continue from its history or outputs.

🚦

Filter by task state

Views can separate work that needs your input, is in progress, is complete, is scheduled or has an unread result.

Manage automations

Scheduled and event-driven Cowork work appears in a dedicated area instead of inside a persistent project workspace.

Keep each layer responsible for one thing

Make task history useful later

🏷️

Include the project and period

A request named “Project Atlas weekly status, 24–28 August” is easier to find than several tasks that all look like “status update.”

📍

Save outputs in a predictable place

Put final files in the project's approved folder. Do not rely on the Cowork conversation as the only place where important work exists.

🔄

Refresh the current context

Reopening a task preserves history, but its sources, owners and assumptions may be stale. Check what changed before continuing.

Example project task

For Project Atlas, use only the files in the approved launch folder and create the weekly status pack for 24–28 August. Save the new outputs in the project reporting folder. Show me the final files and unresolved questions before drafting any communication.
💡
Key insight

Cowork task history is useful execution history, but it is not the project's source of truth. Keep current files and decisions in the systems designed to own them.
